Racine County Medical Reserve Corps to host second annual Conference

The Racine County Medical Reserve Corps will be hosting its 2014 Racine County Medical Reserve Corps Conference on Friday, Sept. 12. The conference is presented with support from the City of Racine Health Department.

Dozens of participants from across Wisconsin and the region are expected to attend the conference at the Gateway Technical College – Racine Campus, 1001 South Main Street in Racine for the daylong event.

A number of different breakout sessions will be offered, with a range of topics including blast injuries, communicable diseases, river safety and rescue essentials, SALT Triage methods, social media and its use in disaster response and recovery, and emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases. A short, hands-on session about the basics of wound closure will also be available.

Presenters for the breakout sessions include the Assistant State Veterinarian from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, a professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the Hospital Epidemiologist from Wheaton Franciscan Health Care – All Saints. Further sessions will be led by four Deputy Sheriffs from the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, as well as a Paramedic from the Racine Fire Department who also serves as an adjunct professor for the Emergency Medical Service program at Gateway Technical College, among others.

The goal of the conference is to provide basic training and increase the knowledge base on these topics for individuals involved in a local Medical Reserve Corps unit or other volunteer group, or simply those interested in learning more about emergency/disaster preparedness. Any interested persons within the community are invited to attend.

Those interested should contact the City of Racine Health Department at (262) 636-9201 and ask for Dan Christianson, no later than Wednesday, Aug. 29. Alternatively, course descriptions and application instructions can be found on the Racine County Medical Reserve Corps Web site: www.CityofRacine.org/MRC.aspx. A $25 fee is required for registration, which covers the cost of the provided lunch and conference materials.
