Gymnasts post season best

The Westosha/Union Grove gymnastics team formed a co-op this year in order to increase numbers – and the quality of the team.

Unfortunately, a number of untimely injuries have taken a toll, putting the squad’s top two athletes on the sidelines. That was the case Saturday as Westosha/UG took 10th at its home Falcon Invite.

The Falcons posted a team score of 110.65 points – its highest team score of the year, but more than 10 points behind the rest of the field. Brookfield Combined finished 11th without a full team.

However, Westosha/UG has Patience Spinler and Aslyn Wolcott – both state qualifiers – on the sidelines right now. Wolcott broke her leg in practice last week and is done for the season, while Spinler is expected back.

As a result, the Falcons were in a teaching mode, working with new-to-varsity gymnasts on new skills Saturday.

“With our two state qualifiers out we are short on advanced gymnastics skills,” said coach Bill Price. “All of our competitors had an improvement today so things are looking up for us.

“I am proud of them.  They keep moving forward,” Price added.

The Falcons started on the vault, getting scores of 8.0 from Jordin Miller, 7.85 from Cassy Goodrich (in her first meet back after a hip injury), a 7.60 from Shannon Dawley, a 7.35 from Jordan Bruley and a 7.25 from Summer York.

Moving to the uneven bars, Goodrich led the team with a 7.35, followed by Dawley (6.15), Miller (4.95), Bruley (4.35) and Cassity Beth (3.80).

Goodrich again led the team on the balance beam, with a 7.35. Miller scored a 7.1, Dawley a 6.85, Bruley a 5.75 and Ashley Derflinger a 5.40.

Finishing up the day on the floor exercise, Miller scored a 7.80, York a 7.675, Dawley a 7.475, Derflinger a 7.05 and Beth a 6.65.

Both York and Goodrich are Union Grove Union High School students, while the rest of the team is from Westosha.
