Panther girls win pair of contests, go to 8-1 overall

Any chance the Delavan-Darien girls’ basketball team had of an upset Friday night disappeared rather quickly.

The Comets had visiting Wilmot to thank for that.

Wilmot raced out to a 13-2 first-quarter lead, followed by a 20-10 scoring edge in the second and never looked back in a dominating 57-38 Southern Lakes Conference victory.

The win improved the Panthers to 4-1 in the SLC and 8-1 overall heading into a non-conference contest Monday night against visiting Burlington Catholic Central. Results of that contest were unavailable by press time.

Wilmot’s pressure defense was the key, coach Keiya Square said.

“It’s the same thing that’s kind of been the formula (this season), and that’s to pressure the basketball and make them turn it over,” he said. “We’re making it hard for teams to get into their offense.”

Square, who coached at Delavan before he came to Wilmot, said he knew his team would have to rely on other ways to score because of the familiarity between the two staffs.

And that’s where the defense – and several layups – entered the picture.

“We had to get some easy buckets and turn them over,” Square said. “We were able to do that right away.”

Sarah Vozel continued her stellar play with a game-high 25 points – and she could have even had a few more, Square said.

“She played really well,” he said. “That 25 could have turned into 35 if she had finished around the basket a couple times. But she’s really hard to defend because she can do a lot of different things.”

Taylor Tenhagen added nine points for the Panthers, followed by Kari Clements with seven.

The win came on the heels of a 67-45 SLC win three nights before over rival Westosha Central.
