All Silver Lake fire trucks ready to roll

The Silver Lake village board approved replacing the six tires on the Silver Lake Fire Department (SLFD) equipment truck at the Oct. 15 regular board meeting.

Half the $2840.08 is to come from money left over in the Silver Lake Police budget.

Assistant Silver Lake police chief Andy Trudeau explained that he mentioned this to SLFD firefighter Allen Dunski and then worked with village president Sue Gerber and emergency committee chair Silver Lake trustee Roger Johnson to finalize the details.

The six tires will come from Petro Lube in Kenosha, the same business that replaced the tires on the fire engines earlier this year.

Johnson explained that the business cut a deal since Petro Lube could resell the used tires.

Silver Lake trustee Chris Willkomm didn’t abstain for this vote as he did the last time a purchase from Petro Lube was on the agenda. At that time, he announced he was abstaining because a family member owns Petro Lube.

SLFD fire chief Allie Drager commented after the meeting, “It was a nice surprise to see the item on the agenda and hear the board approve replacing the tires.”

Drager also said that no one spoke with her about this and that she didn’t understand why then police department was contributing money to the purchase.

“There is enough money left in our budget to do this and it could have been done a while ago,” she said. “We are just glad that all our equipment will be operable.”

The village board also gave Trudeau authority to get three bids on replacing filing cabinets and counters in the police department. Johnson explained that he had a tour of the police department and said, “The counters are in terrible shape and some of the drawers don’t open.”

Trudeau said that he would have solid numbers at the next board meeting.

“This won’t be a big purchase,” he said.

Garbage contract still not set

Trustee Sabrina Moran reported she is still researching the new garage and recycling contract for next year. The current contract is $146,300 a year, which would be a cost of $166 per home for each of the 880 homes.

Silver Lake residents, however, pay for the service as part of the mill rate, so what each Silver Lake resident pays for the service depends on home value.

Village president Sue Gerber was not present at the meeting.
