Six area restaurants will vie for the coveted “Bowls ‘n Bakers” plaques on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Parkway Chateau, 12304 75th St. (Highway 50).

In an effort to raise funds for Kenosha Area Family and Aging Services, Inc., the public is invited to taste the soups between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the 11th annual contest and vote for their three favorites.

“It’s pretty informal,” said Lauren Zielsdorf, director of senior services for the organization. “I have yet in all these years, been able to get through all the soups that we showcase at the event. Some people, it is their mission, they will try every soup that is there. Others are just drawn to what soup sounds good to them, and they vote on what they tasted.”

Because of that, each restaurant’s soup choice is vital for success in the competition, Zielsdorf said.

“You want to have something that people are going to want to try,” Zielsdorf said.

Restaurants participating in the contest include: Binanti’s Taste of Italy, stuffed green pepper soup; Bristol 45 Diner, cream of chicken and rice; Brat Stop, Italian peasant soup; Colony House, chili mac; Luisa’s, Italian potato sausage soup; and Mad Dan’s, potato cheddar cheese soup.

The top three restaurants will each receive a plaque.

“So as you are going out to eat in Kenosha County, you’ll see the Bowls ‘n Bakers plaques in restaurants, which is kind of neat,” Zielsdorf said.

For a fee of $25, or $20 for anyone aged 60 and older, participants can taste and vote on the soup, as well as receive a commemorative soup bowl.

This year, for the first time, there will be a to-go option. Hospitality Nursing and Rehab will provide chili, chicken tortilla and stuffed pepper soups will be available to carry out for $10 each.

“We are hoping to attract people who don’t have time to make a day of it or a lunch of it, they just want to support the event and can fly in and fly out,” Zielsdorf said. “They don’t get the commemorative soup mug, but it is 16 ounces of soup for $10, so it’s a good deal if people want to support the event, but they don’t have time to stay.”

In addition, seniors are donating baked goods that will be sold at the event, which is sponsored by Kenosha Area Family and Aging Services, Inc. and Pat’s Services, Inc. Raffle tickets also will be sold for the chance to win two tickets to the Packer-Bear game on Nov. 9 at Lambeau Field.

“Our mission is twofold. We do work with families, but our senior service services are all geared toward keeping seniors independent in their homes, and that is what this fundraiser helps us to do. And it’s a really good time. People have a lot of fun at this event. It’s very social, and it gives you the opportunity to taste different soups,” Zielsdorf said.
