Westosha Academic Decathlon team qualifies for regionals

The Westosha Central High School Academic Decathlon team was one of 50 teams that advanced to regional competition, as announced last week.

The team of Kelly Corkins, Jamie Voigt, A.J. Reeves, Eddie Korando, Christian Lamey, Alexander Hamilton and Jennifer Sparks qualified to compete at regionals, which will be held in January at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The 32nd season of the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon began on Nov. 10 with 104 teams and more than 1,000 students participating in local competitions statewide.

Westosha earned a score of 11,970, with seven students tested in seven academic areas: art, science, economics, language and literature, mathematics, music and social sciences.

The score ranked 39th overall in the state. Wilmot Union High School’s first team scored a state-high 21,925 – close to 3,000 points higher than any other team in the state.

Teams are normally comprised of nine members, with three competing in one of three categories – honor students (3.75-4.0 grade-point average), scholastic (3.00-3.74 GPA) and varsity (0.0-2.99 GPA). The top two scores in each category area counted to determine the team score.

There are four different divisions based on the school’s enrollment. Westosha competes in Division 2, schools with enrollment from 726 to 1,224 students.

Several different schools in the Southern Lakes Conference qualified for regionals, including Burlington and Union Grove.
