Wilmot posts top academic decathlon score

The Wilmot Union High School Academic Decathlon team posted the highest score in the entire state during local competition Nov. 10.

The Panthers, which had two teams place in the top 30, posted a score of 21,925 – almost 3,000 points higher than any other team.

The next closest was New Richmond High School, which posted a score of 18,926. Wilmot qualified for nationals last season, and are seeking the school’s fifth straight regional title.

Regionals will take place in January at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

According to the school’s website, the score was more than 2,000 points higher than last year’s local score.

Junior Carlie Banchi posted the highest score in school history, scoring 4,694 of a possible 6,000. Other members of the team are Carl Simmons, Johny Weber, Joey Burba, Angela Schumacher, Alyssa Gregory, Althea Disse, Mason Nindl and Claudia Baker.

Alternates include junior Ashley Dabbs and sophomores Alexa Lewis and Kyle Kostrova.

Wilmot’s second team at the event posted a score of 13,536, good for a 21st-place overall ranking.

The 32nd season of the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon began on Nov. 10 with 104 teams and more than 1,000 students participating in local competitions statewide.

Teams are normally comprised of nine members, with three competing in one of three categories – honor students (3.75-4.0 grade-point average), scholastic (3.00-3.74 GPA) and varsity (0.0-2.99 GPA). The top two scores in each category area counted to determine the team score.
