A two-vehicle collision on New Year’s Eve led to the death of a Burlington High School junior.

Samantha Russell, a junior at BHS, was killed in the crash Wednesday afternoon that happened on Highway 50 near 392nd Avenue in Wheatland.

Russell was driving a pickup truck northbound on 392nd and, according to a press release from the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, entered the westbound lanes of Highway 50. Her vehicle was hit by a minivan, and flipped, pinning Russell.

Russell later died. Her 12-year-old passenger, Kayla Brown, was transported by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital. According to the press release, she remained in the hospital Thursday with serious injuries.

The van driver was taken to Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington with non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but neither speed nor alcohol appear to be a factor. There have been no charges or traffic citations filed in this case.
