ROUNDUP: Central girls win; wrestlers lose

The Westosha Central girls basketball team went on the defensive last week against visiting Elkhorn.

And the Falcons rode that right to a lopsided victory.

Central held the Elks to single digits in all four quarters and rolled to a 40-19 Southern Lakes Conference win. The Falcons improved to 9-7 overall and 4-6 in the SLC heading into a road matchup Feb. at Wilmot.

“The defense played phenomenal (against Elkhorn),” Central coach Jerod Boyd said. “I wanted to work on a little man to man, but the 1-3-1 was working so well.

“We were flying around and our rotations were perfect. Everybody contributed.”

Central sprinted out to a 15-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

“Our press really slowed them down and gave us a chance to get set,” Boyd said. “Offensively, we were able to get a lot of ball reversals and took some open shots.”

Central led 21-4 at halftime and outscored Elkhorn 19-15 the last two quarters.

Jaela McGill led the way with 15 points, followed by Mackenzie Meyers with seven and Brienna Bostanche and Colleen Nolan with five each.

Boyd was pleased with McGill’s overall game.

“We played one of the most unselfish games of the season,” he said. “She shared the ball, almost too much, and tried to pound the ball in the paint. We have been really focused on playing inside-out, and she is buying into that philosophy.”

After Tuesday’s game at Wilmot, the Falcons will be back home Friday night against visiting Delavan-Darien at 7 p.m.

“Against Delavan, we need to play hard, not turn the ball over and we should be fine,” Boyd said.

Central wrestlers drop two

The Central wrestling squad dropped six matches by forfeit in two SLC dual meet losses last week.

Central dropped a 68-9 decision Jan. 26 at state-ranked Burlington, followed by a 55-21 setback Jan. 29 at Union Grove.

Winning matches against Union Grove were Ryan Cavil (113), 5-0 over Shane Kieslich; Jonathan Heck (132), by pinfall in 2:38 over Blake Hansen; and Zack Bell (160), 12-7 over Clayton Mauer. The Falcons also picked up a forfeit win at 106 pounds.

Falling to the Broncos were Griffin Bollendorf (126), 4-0 to Brett Kieslich; Dennis Grubb (145), 6-4 to Sam Larson; John Culp (152), 11-9 to Connor Waddell; and Keith Tremelling (170), by major decision 14-5 to Aidan Gutierrez.

Central gave up forfeits a 120, 138, 182, 195, 220 and 285 pounds.

Against Burlington, the Falcons earned one win on the mat and picked up another via injury default.

Andrew Koroly (106) defeated Jacob Whited 13-8, while Culp (152) was awarded a win by default over Wes Gain.

Central lost by forfeit at 120, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285 pounds.

The Falcons hosted Waterford Tuesday night and will travel to Wilmot Saturday morning for the SLC Meet, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Wilmot was scheduled to travel to Delavan-Darien last week, but results were unavailable. The Panthers closed out their regular season Tuesday night against visiting Elkhorn, before the SLC Meet this weekend.
