Central golf team reaps rewards of rebuilding

Having to put an inexperienced group into varsity competition last year often led to some long rounds for the Westosha Central boys golf team.

But a year later, the Falcons are looking to reap the rewards of that rebuilding situation.

Longtime Central coach Mark Olsen, who is entering his 47th year as a high school golf coach, begins 2015 full of optimism for what could happen this spring.

“We look to be much improved this year,” he said. “We played a lot of young guys last year, and even though many of them are still only sophomores, they profited from the playing time they received last year.”

Olsen said the Falcons need to put up solid scores from the top to bottom of their lineup if they want to take the next step this year.

In other words, consistency, consistency, consistency.

“If we are to be successful, we have to get solid performances out of the entire lineup,” he said. “Consistency will be key for us. Fortunately, we do have a few players who are capable of going low.

“But we can’t count on individual performances. We need contributions from everyone.”

Leading that charge, according to Olsen, is senior-freshman duo of Jonah Arbet and Jack Polick.

Arbet is the top returning player from a year ago after he earned second-team, All-Southern Lakes Conference and All-Kenosha County honors last year. He was eighth at the regional to qualify for the sectional, where he finished 18th overall.

“Even though (Arbet and Polick) are at opposite ends of they are our most knowledgeable players,” Olsen said. “They need to lead by example and with what they have to say to their teammates.”

Other seniors on the roster are Brett Ashmus, Ryan Edquist, Brian Griffey, Jonathan Heck, Evan Kirsch, Kevin Lourigan, Tyler Perma, Justin Wermske and Daniel Wimmer.

Juniors out for golf are Graham Andrews, Tanner Asplund, Nikolai Buchman, Daniel Her, Ryker Gridley, Anthony Hodnik, Brian Johnson, Shawn Meyers, Hasan Rahmen and Rory Schmucker.

Members of the sophomore class include Jared Adams, Beau Bergles, Christian Bortko, Derek Drier, Josh Friedrichs, Paul Halladay, Dustin Hucker, Joe Hulbach, Ryan Kirsch, Zach Kramer, Wade Kuebler, Kyle Larsen, Scott Lynch, Bailey Menarek, Drake Muhlenbeck, Brett Niederer, Shane Parker, Matthew Perona and Thomas Walsh.

Two other freshmen, Connor Muff and Josh Leslie, also are listed on the roster.
