The Kenosha County Finance and Administration Committee approved the changes in the Kenosha County budget June 11 resulting from the decision to provide policing for the Village of Silver Lakes.

The Village Board voted unanimously in favor of the decision at a special meeting in May.

“All major calls we’ve handled in Silver Lake anyhow,” Sheriff David Beth said.

The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department took over patrolling Silver Lakes June 17.

As per the agreement, the sheriff’s deputies will cover a 16.5-hour day in two shifts.

As state statute requires, the Sheriff’s Department must make every attempt possible to hire the officers from Silver Lake, Beth explained.

All five Silver Lake officers went through civil service testing. Four passed, and the other has put in a request to be reconsidered, Beth said.

All the hired officers will be going through the Field Training Officer program, just as newly hired sheriff’s deputies would.

“I think all of them have a huge respect for our department and how we handle things,” Beth said.
