False alarm on the Fox River

Flood warning canceled Saturday

The Fox River near New Munster did not reach flood stage as anticipated Saturday, resulting in the National Weather Service canceling the flood warning issued Friday.

The flood warning followed two inches of rain last week that caused the River to reach 9-1/2 feet.

Meteorologists anticipated that the river would eclipse 11 feet by Saturday, affecting properties along the river in the towns of Wheatland and Salem and the Village of Silver Lake.

However, the River stayed a shade below 11 feet at 10.9 inches.

“We were expecting the River to reach flood stage by Saturday, but it reached 10.9 feet,” said Sarah Marquardt, Meteorologist of the NWS in Sullivan.

Initial projections on Friday reported that the river would crest at 12.2 feet.

Since Saturday, the Fox River experienced a steady decline in water levels, with the reading reaching 10.3 feet by Monday evening.

Marquardt said floodwater forecasts are unpredictable.

“The River flooding forecast is very tricky, with recent rains we expected it would rise,” she said.
