With nearly 150 student performers, holiday tunes and classic songs filled the Wilmot Union High School auditorium Monday.

The band concert featured ensembles that included wind, jazz, percussion, trombone and symphonic instruments was the 15th performance for Band Director John Sorensen.

“I had a great group of kids, I have always had a great group of kids,” he said. “They have a thirst for knowledge and different styles.”

The jazz ensemble, consisting of 15 students, performed three musical pieces, including “Stompin’ at the Savoy” by Benny Goodman, Edgar Sampson and Chick Webb.

They capped off their set with Sammy Nestico’s “Martinique” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.”

Senior Ronnie Hibbing, a trumpeter, said he enjoys the holiday theme, noting that it brings the entire group together.

“I like how everybody acts around others, because it is the holidays and it is a really fun and emotional concert,” Hibbing said.

The concert band played “Of Pride and Celebration” by James Swearingen along with “Star Wars Saga” by John Williams.

After several other pieces, the band came down to play its most challenging piece, Percy Granger’s “Children’s March.”

“Originally, he wrote it for piano beforehand, so he had a duet,” Sorensen said. “He dedicates it to his friends over the hill and far away.”
