Village aims to open ice rink

Silver Lake has goal of opening rink Jan. 1

The Silver Lake Village Board approved moving $3,800 from its fire department budget to its parks budget to fund an ice skating rink that will be built at Schmalfeldt Park.

The action was taken at the board’s Dec. 16 meeting.

“The forecast is a temperature in the 20’s for New Year’s Day,” explained village Trustee Doug Randolph in a later telephone interview.

Randolph is head of the parks commission and said the plan is to pick up plywood on Dec. 28. Randolph and volunteers will cut and paint the boards.

“There is so much moisture in the ground,” he continued, “That when the ground freezes, it will freeze hard.”

“The plan is to place the boards now,” Randolph said, “and place the liner and fill it just before the freeze hits.”
