Sparked by a 15-2 run, the Lady Falcons warded off resilient Waterford to dent the win column in a 56-47 decision Dec. 22.

Westosha Central’s victory at Waterford is their first of the season after starting the season 0-7.

Lady Falcons’ 5-foot-8 senior Elaine Anderson, who scored a game-high 20 points, started the 15-2 run with a steal, followed by a 2-point shot and another from the perimeter.

Waterford responded with a bucket from junior Athena Zuehlke, who scored six points, before Anderson and 5-foot-4 junior Lindsay Kimpler (10 points) made back-to-back 3-pointers.

Westosha Central coach Jerod Boyd credited the Anderson’s poise early in the game.

“She is one of our better scorers, and when she gets on fire, she is hard to stop,” Boyd said. “She made two big 3s to start, which got us going and we never looked back.”

The Falcons continued to score, with a Mackenzie Meyers’ basket and two Katrina Bostanche free throws before Waterford senior Ella Hunsucker doused the Falcons on a shot beyond the arc.

Meyers, a 5-7 senior, finished with nine points, three boards, a block and steal while the 5-7 Bostanche had a team-leading four steals and notched eight points.

“Our defense played phenomenal,” Boyd said. “We forced a lot of turnovers and started flying around.”

The Falcons held the lead until the second half when Waterford’s Annie Wencke scored to pull the Wolverines ahead 34-33 with under 12 minutes left.

Senior Hannah Tuska, Waterford’s leading scorer with 12 points, put Westosha Central in a 36-33 deficit.

Junior Katie Boarini of Westosha Central pulled the game within one on a basket, followed by a go-ahead score by Meyers to give the Falcons a 37-36 lead.

Although Meyers fouled out, Boyd cited her gritty style of play as another reason for the team’s win at Waterford.

“(Meyers) takes charges, dives on loose balls, and rebounds the basketball,” Boyd said. “She does all the little hustle things that keep this team going.”

While the Lady Falcons held on for the win, Boyd said Waterford was relentless the last nine minutes.

“The most challenging was Waterford’s resilience,” Boyd said. “They never gave up, and even though were ahead, it never felt like we were running away with the game.”

Westosha Central improved to 1-7 (1-2 SLC) while the Wolverines dropped to 1-5 (1-3 SLC).

The Falcons return home to face Southern Lakes foe Elkhorn Tuesday, Jan. 5.
