The Salem Town Board recently approved a resolution to lower the speed limit on 216th Avenue from 45 mph to 35 mph.

The eastern portion of 216th Avenue is in the village of Bristol while the western portion is within Salem township boundaries.

According to Salem Town Chairman Diann Tesar, Bristol approached Salem to ask for cooperation on the speed limit change.

“216th Avenue is a main artery between (Highway) AH and (Highway) 50,” she said in a recent telephone interview.

“We have gotten numerous resident complaints about the amount of traffic and the speed cars travel on 216th,” she continued.

“I believe that Bristol has received more complaints than Salem has,” Tesar said, “and we needed to work together.”

The resolution, approved and signed on Dec. 14, goes into effect when Bristol approves the resolution.

Bristol Village Administrator Randy Kerkman said, “The board has given authority to change the speed ordinance in Bristol, but it will take a while to have it written and approved. We should get the signs up for the change from 45 mph to 35 mph sometime in January.”
