Village crews have no trouble cleaning up after snowstorm

Process was smooth despite staffing

After 5 inches of snow blanketed the Village of Twin Lakes last week, a short-handed Department of Public Works needed 96 hours to clean 33 miles of village roads, according to Village Administrator Jennifer Frederick.

The village, which typically has four staff, had three plow drivers on Dec. 28 – the day the snowstorm hit.

Despite the short staffing, the village reported no significant issues as a result of the moisture-packed snow, Frederick said.

“We had sleet, so it was heavy and harder to move,” she said. “It pushed some of our plows out there given the heavy nature (of the snow).”

Meteorologist Justin Schultz, of the National Weather Service’s Sullivan office, said western Kenosha County municipalities did not receive the worst of the storm, citing a record-setting 9 inches at Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, supplanting the previous mark of 5-1/2 inches in 2007.

When melted, the snow from the airport equated to 6.9 inches of water, Schultz added.

“It could be higher moisture content, compared to the lighter form,” Schultz said.

While the Village Hall received a handful of complaints related to snow removal, there were no reported accidents, according to Police Chief Adam Grosz.

“We didn’t have any major problems here at Twin Lakes,” Grosz said.
