A new gymnasium greeted nearly 400 Lakewood School students and staff Monday on their return from holiday break.

The project that began in April included new band and art rooms, and heating and air conditioning upgrades, with a cost of $10 million.

To ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, it included accessibility ramps.

Despite the wait, all additions are worth it, according to longtime physical education teacher Michael McNulty.

“This is a beautiful facility, and I think it will serve the kids and community well,” said McNulty, who was a 1972 graduate of the school, and a faculty member since 1989.

In 1961, fewer than 100 students attended gym class at the school.

“It was so compact and small, we couldn’t do much,” McNulty said. “Now with dodgeball, the kids have a chance to get the space to move.”

Madison-based firm Nexus Solutions was responsible for construction and design of the facility, which boasts a 35-foot high ceiling – at least 10 feet more than the old gym.
