For the first time in more than a decade, there will be a local primary election in the Village of Twin Lakes.

The primary comes after six candidates, including two incumbents, filed for candidacy with the Lakewood School Board.

Candidates for any election had since Dec. 1 to file nomination papers, with a Dec. 28 deadline for incumbents to file non-candidacy papers.

The deadline for filing nomination papers was Jan. 5.

Joe Price, Lakewood School Superintendent, said he has never experienced a primary in his nine years as administrator.

Price said to force a primary “the rules governing this are, if there are more than twice as many candidates as there are members to be elected.”

The primary slated for Feb. 9, consists of two incumbents, board President Amanda Hahn and Clerk Kathy Ticha, along with four challengers.

All other Twin Lakes elections are uncontested, unless a write-in candidate emerges.

Price said the Lakewood primary could be a positive sign for the community.

“I would hope that is because we have so many great things happening at Lakewood,” Price said. “And community members want to be more involved.”

Challengers include current Wilmot Union High School Board member Steve Turner, Nicholas Heckel, Scott Whipple and Barry Woods.
