With several shades of green and hints of the fabled Audrey 2, Westosha Central Swing Inc. started its season Saturday at Burlington’s Chocolate City Showcase.

While Westosha didn’t make the cut to finals – the top six of 15 choirs between the prep and open divisions – the group received some positive feedback.

Westosha Director Rob Clark said through email that, as a director, he could see places where he wants the group to improve.

“As a director, I am never pleased, there is something else we could improve on,” Clark said. “That is my job.”

Clark said the soloists in the show were all complimented, as was the energy of the group.

“We need to continue to sharpen the choreography and some of the transitions,” Clark said he was told.

While Westosha didn’t make the cut to finals, five-time defending champion Mayville did – and came up the winner yet again. The Cardinal Singers performed a parody of show choir, starting off with “O Fortuna!” from Carmina Burana before the “director” cut the group off and told them to get back to rehearsal.

From there, the group did parody versions of “Officer Krupke and “Cell Block Tango,” as well as a song from the musical “Pippin” and ending with one of the group’s previous hits – “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

Mundelein, Ill., which brought three show choirs to the competition – a co-ed squad, an all-boys and an all-girls group – saw two of the three make finals.

The Mundelein Sound FX, the all-boys group, finished as first runner-up to Mayville with a humorous, light-hearted show. Mundelein Sound, the co-ed group, ended up as the fifth runner-up.

The Eisenhower Express, last year’s first runner-up out of Illinois, ended up as second runner-up this time, followed by Brodhead and Parkview.

Mayville earned best music and choreography in the competition.
