Wilmot wrestling captures fourth

The Panther wrestlers took fourth among eight teams in last weekend’s Bernie Kane Classic held in Madison.

Oconomowoc won the meet.

Wilmot Union, who defeated host Madison East 54-24 in the first round, went on to beat Madison Memorial 58-18, but fell to Oconomowoc 51-24 in the third round.

In the next two matches, the Panthers dropped decisions to Madison LaFollette (50-26) before losing in the third place match to Campbellsport 40-35.

Senior Jake Morgan stayed unbeaten, winning all five of his matches, with three on pins, competing both the 152- and 160-pound classes.

Additionally, sophomore Ellie won four of her five matches, with all five coming on pins in the 132-pound class.

Central wrestlers snag first in Lake Mills Invite

Westosha Central High School swept all five dual matches at the L-Cat Invitational Saturday to capture first place at 5-0.

The Falcon wrestlers, who won matches against Lake Mills, Delavan-Darien, Palmyra-Eagle, Waterloo and North Fond du Lac had six undefeated wrestlers at the meet in Lake Mills.

Coming away with 5-0 records were Andrew Koroly (106), Jefferson Kearby (132), Austin Kukla (138), Dennis Grubb (152), Zach Bell (170) and Reid McNeill (182).

HOCKEY

Kenosha Thunder 6, Beloit Memorial 3

Cody Faber of Wilmot Union High School contributed two assists to help extend Kenosha’s win streak to three games on Jan. 20.

The junior assisted in a Nicholas Elsen power-play goal to pull the Thunder ahead 3-0 in the second period, and later added his second on an even strength goal by Brett DeLaat to seal the 6-3 win.

Faber has six assists in 14 games for the Thunder.

Westosha Central’s Kyle Kuhfuss also pitched in with an assist, aiding Jackson Jones on a power-play goal by Anthony Svoboda in the second period to give the Thunder a 4-1 lead.

The Thunder, who are 2-3 in the Classic-8, improved to 9-5 with the non conference victory.

Kenosha outshot the Purple Knights 25-16 and went 2-for-7 on power plays.

 

Janesville 3, Kenosha 0

Despite outshooting visiting Janesville Saturday, the Thunder had its winning streak snapped in a 3-0.

The Thunder had 31 shots on goal, compared to Janesville’s 18.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Berlin Eisenhower 85, Wilmot Union 48

After a losing its fourth straight game Jan. 22 against Lake Geneva Badger, the Panthers had to face undefeated New Berlin Eisenhower the following day at Wisconsin Dells’ Just A Game Field House.

New Berlin (14-0, 8-0 Woodland-West) jumped to an early 50-18 lead entering halftime, and had 13 of its 15 players score at least a point, although Panthers’ Bobby Brenner scored a game-high 23 points.

Scoring in double-figures for New Berlin were Stephen Kraninger with 18 along with Sullivan Kulju and Will Polczynski at 12 points each.

Wilmot dropped to 5-9 on the season.

 

Lake Geneva Badger 70, Wilmot Union 68

The Panthers had it, and then they didn’t, at Lake Geneva Badger Jan. 22.

Wilmot Union, who took a 35-33 lead entering halftime, held on until midway through the second half, which included a 51-46 lead, but it all came down to the last minute of the game when the Badgers jumped ahead to win 70-68.

Panthers’ senior Bobby Brenner produced his second straight 30-point game, pouring in a game-high 36 points.

However, Jake Berhorst and Mason DuMez of the Badgers answered with 25 and 22 points.

Sophomore Latrell Glass added 14 points for Wilmot, who fell to 3-5 in the Southern Lakes Conference (5-8 overall).
