Communities reporting power outages, high winds

With peak wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, some western Kenosha County communities are reporting multiple power outages Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan still has a high wind warning in effect for all of Southern Wisconsin through 6 p.m. Friday.

The warning comes when sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts exceeding 58 mph are expected.

Meteorologist Sarah Marquardt of the National Weather Service reported peak wind gusts of 63 at Kenosha Municipal Airport, 61 in Elkhorn and at Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport.

“Those were the highest wind gusts of the area,” said Marquardt.

The National Weather Service anticipates strong southwest to westerly winds with higher gusts near the state line region.

According to the We Energies website, 979 people are without power on Antioch Road near 103rd Street in the Town of Salem, citing a downed tree.

Additionally, there were outages reported in the Village of Silver Lake and the towns of Wheatland, Paris, Brighton and Bristol.

Marquardt noted wind gusts can still persist after the high wind warning expires.

“They will be diminishing through the evening, but after midnight, it should calm down,” she said.

The warning, which indicates a potential of property damage, also notes that small trash cans and lawn furniture could be blown around, and high profile vehicles traveling north or south can be difficult to control.
