After competing short-handed against Elkhorn just two days before, Westosha/Union Grove gymnastics coach Bill Price was pleased simply not to finish last Saturday at the Spartan Invite in Madison.

The gym team scored 108.15 to finish seventh of eight teams in the White Division. Burlington/Badger/Wilmot won the Green Division with a score of 145.925.

“We had a positive in that we did not finish last in our division,” said Price, who has his best two gymnasts sitting with injuries and four others sitting out as well. “We managed to outscore someone.”

Price also pointed out that the gymnasts who are competing are making steady progress.

“Our team keeps improving in little steps,” Price said. “This will help us be more competitive in 2012-13 when we welcome more gymnasts. (It was) a good job by all our gymnasts.”

Union Grove sophomore Cassy Goodrich competed in the all-around for the first time, totaling 28.50. She scored a 7.9 on the vault, a 7.05 on the uneven bars, a 7.45 on the balance beam and a 6.1 on the floor.

The scores on every event were either the highest score for the team or tied for it.

Cassity Beth tied Goodrich on vault with a 7.9, while Jordan Bruley scored 7.8 and German foreign exchange student Neela Winter a 7.60.

On the uneven bars, Beth added a 6.5 score, while Ashley Derflinger scored a 5.25 and Bruley a 4.50. Derflinger scored 7.05 on the beam, while Bruley had a 5.85 and Cassity Beth a 5.70.

On the floor exercise, Beth led the way with a 7.55, while Derflinger scored a 7.45 and Burley a 6.50.

Against Elkhorn Jan. 26, Westosha/UG posted a score of 95.075 to Elkhorn’s 128.05.

Goodrich had the team’s top score on the vault (7.85) and the bars (6.70), while Shannon Dawley led the way
