School plans an epic celebration

Every year, Salem Grade School plans a celebration event and invites the community.

This year is a little different. This year the district plans to celebrate 100-plus years.

In past years, the event has been held on a Thursday night, but this year the event will be held on Sunday, April 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.

And Principal Eileen Bruton is still looking for historical memorabilia from the school and the surrounding community.

Plans for the event have been in process, Bruton said, for the past several years. And every grade and all staff members are involved.

“We really appreciate that our teachers and staff are willing to come in on a Sunday,” she said. “Since some people will be traveling some distance, we decided a weekend day was best.”

Every grade will highlight a decade, stating with Grade 8 and 1900. Several grades already have some details fleshed out.

Sixth grade will showcase a speakeasy with a museum of games from the 1920’s. Some games will be viewable only, but some can be played.

Fourth grade will have a timeline of advertisements for products and entertainment for World War II.

The event will begin in the North Gym with a short historical presentation.

There will be root beer floats and hot dogs for all and “decade candy” for the children – an assortment of candy enjoyed in the different historical decades – in the North Cafeteria. There will also be a display of postcards and other historical memorabilia in the North Cafeteria.

The program will end with a staff performance in the North Gym.

Bruton is especially interested in pictures and anecdotal information from 1900 to about 1970. If you anything to share, call her at 262-843-2356, ext. 411.

Anyone interested in attending the event can also call for more information.
