Randall seeks more open dialogue with community

Randall Consolidated School is seeking ways to bolster communications with the district residents, according to Administrator John Gendron, who presented another method at its board meeting last week.

Gendron has a mass mailing plan to all 6,000 mailboxes in the Randall District, noting a most of them do not have children attending school.

“We got so many residents in the community that don’t have kids,” Gendron said. “Sometimes we do a good job communicating to our parents of all the great that are happening, but they are still in the minority of our tax base.”

The idea comes more than six months after taxpayers voted to exceed revenue limits by $460,000, citing a decline of generated revenue the last five years, as one of the several reasons.

Gendron said the support of the community, which passed the referendum in a landslide 339-90 vote, is important to maintain.

“We want to make sure that we find ways to get information to them of the things that are happening,” Gendron said. “Also, we want to explain to them that we are being fiscally responsible.”

While he notes parents receive routine communications, visit the school website or the school itself, informing the rest of the tax base is imperative.

“How do we reach those people who may not have kids or visit our website or come into our school,” he said. “They pay taxes, so we want to be sure they are informed.”

The district hopes to develop a mailer, with a targeted spring distribution, and has long-range plans to send it twice a year.

The Board voted unanimously, 5-0, on the following items:
• Extended Gendron’s contract another two years as the district administrator. He has served the school since 2014.
• Approved its part of the Special Education Consortium, which includes serving as the fiscal agent. The fiscal agent houses the eventual director of pupil services position that will rotate through Wilmot Union, Lakewood and Riverview.
