Town of Wheatland officials are examining a possible memorial to recognize those in the community.

The proposal, at the request of the Town’s Recreation Board, could place the memorial on the southwest corner of New Munster Park near the bi-centennial marker.

Wheatland’s Assistant Fire Chief, Brian Kerkman, said the new memorial’s size is similar to the bi-centennial marker.

However, questions linger about whom to memorialize, according to Wheatland Town Chairman William Glembocki.

“What are the criteria?” Glembocki questioned.

Town Supervisor Andrew Lois thought of creating a list of 20 inaugural members on the memorial, with five to follow annually.

Furthermore, Wheatland officials were concerned about who could qualify for the memorial.

“I like the idea, but maybe there should be more thought into it,” Glembocki said.

Instead of taking action, the board opted to keep it at the discussion phase, and will revisit it on the first monthly regular board meeting.

Wheatland officials are targeting September 2016 with the potential of a ceremony conducted by the Fire Department.
