Central apologetic after KKK presentation

A Westosha Central High School student delivering a presentation on the 1920’s in a Ku Klux Klan-style outfit touched off public backlash and left school officials apologetic Monday.

The unnamed student dressed in a hood and robe drew the attention of classmates, who posted photos of the student to social media, which, in turn, sparked the backlash.

Multiple regional news outlets picked up on the story, leading to a since-deleted apology posted on the school’s Facebook page.

Westosha Central Principal Lisa Albrecht expressed disappointment over the incident and hopes the school can move forward.

“At Central we focus on positive experiences to engage our students and promote academic excellence,” Albrecht said. “In this situation, I was very saddened by the approach and have taken measures to help educate those involved to better understand how something like this, while completely unintentional, can have devastating effects.”

School officials did not disclose what, if any, discipline was issued in this case.

Albrecht said she hopes the incident leads to better understanding and accountability in the future.

“What’s important is to understand the impact, accept responsibility for the poor judgment, and move forward in growing understanding,” she said.
