Vicki Galich is a hometown girl, born and raised in Silver Lake.

She is married to George and their daughter, Chantelle, also lives in the village with her 5-year-old twins, Brody and Brielle. They began kindergarten at Riverview this year.

“Those three are the light of my life,” Galich said in a recent interview.

Galich is the new, part-time clerk/treasurer in Silver Lake. She started on April 18 and dug right in.

The big challenges are learning the rules and deadlines for municipal government and developing a daily routine to appropriately deal with it all.

“Many things must be done and submitted to the appropriate places at certain times,” Galich said. “If deadlines are missed, there are often fines to pay.”

“That is money misspent,” she continued, “and that’s a problem in a small community like Silver Lake. I want to avoid that.”

Galich is no stranger to government, having spent 30 years working for Kenosha County. She started out in the circuit court and spent the greatest part of her career in the financial department of public works.

The Friday before heading into the Silver Lake Village Hall, Galich finished up a limited term assignment with Walworth County, helping that government with finances of things until the county hired a financial director.

“Since I’m retired,” Galich explained, “I can only work 1,200 hours a years and that is about 20 hours a week.”

Right now, Galich spends her time making sure all journal entries are complete and making sure the budget is up to date.

The process is a team effort, including Sue Nelson, deputy clerk/treasurer.

“Sue has a vast knowledge of how the municipal government works and has been a tremendous help,” Galich said.
