After junior Maddie Martin notched a personal best in the Z-Invite at Westosha Central two weeks ago, the sprinter continues to blaze a trail in 400-meter dash, taking another first-place finish in last weekend’s Fort Invite.

The Lady Panthers athlete has sprinter coach Trey Bell to thank, according to Wilmot Union High School’s head track coach Norm Preo.

“(Trey) has put a lot of emphasis on the conditioning aspect involved in being a successful sprinter,” Preo said. “He has a vast amount of knowledge in helping athletes improve their speed.”

Since the start of the season, Martin has finished first in the 400 at three meets, including a personal best 59.34 seconds at the nine-team Z-Invite at Westosha Central April 21.

Martin followed up with another on April 29 when she finished a mere second behind her personal best set the week before, but more three seconds ahead of second-place Lani Lum of Watertown Luther Prep.

While the Lady Panthers finished last as a team at the Invite, there is continued success on the relay teams.

Martin, along with seniors Rebecca and Abbie Alter, and junior Julia Shurtleff finished third at the 1,600-meter relay April 29, another testament to Bell’s coaching.

“Trey has also been re-enforcing the importance of the hand-offs in relays, and it shows in all of our relays,” Preo said.

Meanwhile, the boys relay team consisting of sophomore Anthony Poco, senior Jayden Jesse, senior Anthony Klein and junior Matt Cieslak finished first in the 400 relay in the Fort Atkinson Invitational (45.47).

Also, Poco and Jayden Jesse and Cieslak contributed to the first place 1,600-relay squad that included junior Zac Schroeder, winning by five seconds against a team from Mount Horeb (3 minutes, 34.76 seconds).

Furthermore, Poco, Jesse and Cieslak along with freshman Cullen Ketterhagen took second in the 800-relay, losing by a shade over one second (1:33.75).

“We also have some very quick boys sprinters,” Preo said, noting Jayden Jesse was a 2015 state qualifier in the 200-meter dash.

Senior Wyatt Heckel, another state qualifier, finished tied for second in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-feet-6 inches.

The Wilmot boys finished sixth among nine schools in the Friday meet.

Central boys fourth, Lady Falcons fifth at Badger Invite
The Lady Falcons notched two first place finishes at the seven-team Badger Invite April 29, where they finished fifth at 86.5 points.

Jefferson won the girls meet with 157 points.

Senior Sydney Rau supplanted her previous personal best in the pole vault by one foot, clearing the bar at 10-feet to finish first, and sophomore Meghan Capra went the distance in the 1,600-meter run, taking the top spot.

Rau’s previous personal best was in 2014 when she was a state qualifier in the event.
Capra, meanwhile, added her own personal best finish in the 1,600 run, where she clocked in at 5 minutes, 27.80 seconds.

The sophomore distance runner’s time eclipsed last year’s mark, where she registered in at 5:36.53.

Additionally, Capra placed third in 3,200-run (12:07.80) and sophomore Mackenzie Maccaux was fifth in the same event, compiling a personal-best 12:37.50.

Sophomore Jaden McKenna, who finished third in the 200-meter dash, notched a personal best 28.49.

Other top five finishers were junior Madi Hansen in the 300-meter hurdles (4th, 50.46), Julia Ziemelis in the 300 hurdles (5th, 50.53),

In the discus, Amanda Sabourin finished fourth (112-03) and senior Olivia Simmons was fifth (109-06).

Finishing third in the high jump was senior Hadlei Stanczek (5-08) while Jenna Trione was fifth at 4-08.00.

While the Badger boys won their own Invitational with 173, Westosha Central took fourth, 73 points behind Lake Geneva.

The Falcons also notched personal bests from junior Austin Kurylo (400), senior Jacob Hebior (1,600), senior Matthew Holloway (800), senior Connor LaRoche (110 and 330 hurdles), junior John Capelli (110, 300 hurdles; high jump, triple jump).

Kurylo placed third in the 400-meter dash (51.97), Hebior was second in both the 800- and 1,600-meter (2:01.36, 4:28.44) while LaRoche notched first in the 300-hurdles (43.29) and second in the 110-hurdles (43.29).

Capelli earned third place in the triple jump at 39-03.50 and sixth in the high jump (5-08.00).
Jacob Voight, a junior, finished third in the pole vault at 11-00 while sophomore Josh Engberg notched fifth (10-06.00).
