After a hard-fought loss to Delavan-Darien May 10, the Westosha Central girls soccer team stepped up in a rivalry game at Wilmot May 13, shutting out the Lady Panthers 1-0.

“They practiced pretty hard this week, they had a let-down earlier in the week,” said Lady Falcons coach Luis Totera. “They came in ready to play.”

Entering the second half in a scoreless tie, sophomore Stephanie Dopuch stepped in on a corner kick, netting the decisive goal.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of these girls after this win,” Totera said.

Dopuch stated it was redemption after losing a 4-2 decision against the Comets May 10.

“I was pretty excited to get it,” said Dopuch, noting it was imperative to stay in possession of the ball the entire game.

Lady Panthers’ coach John Watson said gaining possession was a challenge against Westosha Central.

“We got outplayed tonight. Central was beating us to the ball,” Watson said. “We gave up one too many corner kicks.”

Additionally, Friday’s shutout is freshman Kelsey Gross’ fourth of the season, according to coach Luis Totera.

“Kelsey is phenomenal, she is a freshman,” Totera said. “To have a freshman play in varsity as a keeper is impressive. She is doing really well, cuts of angles good, and can’t wait to see her in the future.”

The Lady Falcons improved to 2-3 in the Southern Lakes Conference while Wilmot dropped to 1-3-1.
