Freshman Austin Glidden gave it all he had in Westosha Central’s Southern Lakes Conference showdown against in Lake Geneva Thursday.

Entering the game sporting a 2-1 record, Glidden tossed 6 2/3 innings, struck out five, walked three and allowed two earned runs on eight hits en route to a 4-3 win against the Badgers.

Glidden’s performance elated Westosha Central coach Jacob Morman.

“Austin gave us an absolute gutsy performance tonight, and I couldn’t be happier with how he is developing as a pitcher,” Jacob Morman said. “As a freshman I’ve been very impressed with how mature he is, how he competes each pitch, and demands a lot out of himself.”

After Lake Geneva posted a run in the bottom of the first, the Falcons picked up the pace, providing the support Glidden needed in the three-run second inning.

Singles by Joe Morman and Jake Werth and a Glidden bunt loaded the bases, and after a Jack Schroeder strikeout, Austin Podella came to the plate.

Podella, who went 1 for 3, knocked Morman and Werth with an opposite field single to give Westosha Central a 2-1 edge.

“(Podella) had an excellent at bat and battled with two strikes and gave us some momentum,” Jacob Morman said.

The following inning, Lake Geneva diminished the lead to 3-2, but Glidden cruised for the rest of game.

Westosha Central added a run in the fifth inning on a Tanner Bykowski sacrifice fly, plating Josh Leslie, who lead off the inning with a triple.

In the seventh inning, Glidden showed signs of tiring with two outs and a runner on third, forcing Jacob Morman to call upon Trent Jones in relief.

“Austin’s pitch count was getting up there and you could see that he was losing his effectiveness,” Jacob Morman said. “Trent has been outstanding in relief this season and is someone that I trust to get big outs late in the game and today was no different.”

Jones coaxed a groundout to Tanner Bykowski to secure Glidden’s 4-3 win.

Leading Falcon hitters were Joe Morman (2-3, run) and Garrett Gilbert, who went 2 for 4 with a double.

Tyler Love, who pitched two innings, took the loss for Lake Geneva after allowing three earned runs on five hits, walked none and struck out four.

Westosha Central improved to 14-7 overall after Thursday’s win.
