Panthers charge through Stoughton Sectionals

While the Panthers roared through the WIAA Division 1 Track Sectionals in Stoughton Thursday, school records were broken, and yielded several state qualifiers.

Junior Maddie Martin, who broke an earlier school record in the 400-dash, reestablished it with a second place finish in the event at 57.66 seconds en route to a state appearance in La Crosse.

Heading to La Crosse with Martin for the Lady Panthers are juniors Rachel Kostrova and Julia Shurtleff and senior Rebecca Alter in the 1,600 relay following a record-breaking time of 4:01.30 for a second-place finish.

Three of the four were on last year’s state qualifying squad in the event, Martin, Kostrova and Alter.

For the boys, senior Wyatt Heckel advanced to the state meet after finishing second in the pole vault at 13-06.00, while a squadron of relay squads are moving forward.

Senior Jayden Jesse and sophomore Anthony Poco were on both state-qualifying relay teams, with the duo taking second in the 400-relay with senior Anthony Klein and Evan Orre at 43.14 seconds.

Additionally, the pair of runners, along with Jordan Jesse and senior Matt Cieslak producing a third-place performance in the 1,600-relay at 3 minutes, 24.61 seconds.

Both relay squads broke school records.
