For George Capelli, it was the last shot at a WIAA State Tennis berth, and the Westosha Central senior got in as a special qualifier with junior Lucas Graveley on May 27.

The Westosha Central duo, who has compiled a 17-5 record, opened the tennis tournament Thursday against Kettle Moraine’s Alex Meeth and Cole Roecker (23-3).

“Being chosen by the seeding committee because of our performance and record is truly an honor and we could not have gotten this far without our coaches fighting for us and our team improving us everyday,” Capelli said.

In three years, the duo has compiled a 48-15 overall record along with three Southern Lakes Conference titles.

Capelli stated chemistry was key to their success.

“Lucas and I also love to get pumped and feed off each other’s energy,” Capelli said. “Playing with Lucas the last three years has been an absolute blast and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone, not even Roger Federer.”

The selection came despite losing their first match at the WIAA Division 1 Waukesha South Sectional, but Capelli acknowledged they put up a fight.

“Lucas and I were very happy on how we played at Sectionals and gave it our all to the last point,” he said.

Other Falcons that appeared at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional were senior Luke Andrekus in No. 1 singles, junior Gage Reynolds in No. 3 singles, the duo of seniors Lucas Wysiatko and Zack Wermeling in No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 pair consisting of juniors Tevin Pielhau and Lucas Fitzpatrick.

The Wysiatko/Wermeling duo notched a second place finish, ending their season 20-2.

Meanwhile, Reynolds placed fourth and finished with a 5-16 overall record in his junior campaign.

The team of Pielhau and Fitzpatrick completed their season with an 8-9 record after a fourth place finish.

Andrekus lost his first match, and did not place, but finished his season at 12-6.
