Two years removed from a WIAA Division 1 state appearance, Westosha Central senior Sydney Rau is making a return in a different event, capturing a sectional title in the pole vault at Stoughton May 26.

Rau is not the only qualifier, however, with junior Amanda Sabourin placing third in the discus and senior Jacob Hebior in the 3,200-run along with junior Austin Kurylo in the 200-dash.

With Rau and Hebior’s sectional performance, both of them have advanced to state twice this season, with Rau going for gymnastics and Hebior appearing in cross country.

Rau, who qualified in the 400-dash as a sophomore, cleared the bar at 10-feet, six inches more than Janesville Parker’s Hanna Rainiero.

Her state berth achieved her mission entering the season, which started with a state appearance in gymnastics during the winter sports season.

“It feels amazing, it makes me realize that all my hard work has finally paid off. Especially being a senior and being able to go to state for gymnastics and track my two favorite sports means I have accomplished my goals for my senior year,” Rau said.

She credited her coach, Dave Mobile for giving her the strength to persevere this season, which brought her several personal bests in the pole vault.

The senior is not the only state qualifier for the Lady Falcons after Sabourin finished third in the discus with a throw of 118-06.

Rau knows Sabourin’s work ethic, citing the discus thrower teams up with her in two relays, and has witnessed her development the last three years.

For the boys, Kurylo finished third in the 200-dash, recording a time of 23.20 seconds, less than 2/10ths from catching Stoughton sophomore Sam McHone.

While Rau focused on contributing to the girls squad, Kurylo’s athletic ability did not go unnoticed by Rau, who noted Kurylo as a key contributor on the Falcons team.

Joining Kurylo on the state stage is Hebior, who finished second in the 3,200-meter run, less than a second from topping junior Finn Fessner of Madison La Follette.

Hebior’s state berth did not come as a surprise for Rau, who stated she looked up to him when she tried out for the cross-country team as a junior, noting his impeccable endurance.

New records set
In addition to Hebior’s school record established at the Stoughton Sectional, a relay team dented the record books.

Although the 800-relay squad of Sabourin, Tay Washak, Madi Hansen and Jaden McKenna did not advance to the state meet, the foursome captured a school record in the event with a clocked time of 1:47.91 in a sixth place effort.
