The Twin Lakes Police Department is investigating reports of counterfeit bills circulating throughout the community, according to the department’s Facebook Page, and are asking business owners to stay vigilant.

“We are encouraging citizens to closely examine currency by looking carefully at the money being exchanged,” the post stated.

According to police reports given to news sources, at least three businesses along Lake Avenue reported incidents of counterfeit $20 bills, with the most recent occurring Monday. There might be a possibility that these businesses could be using Counterfeit Detectors that would have helped them identify the fake bills.

While the investigation continues, police are asking anyone with information on counterfeit money to contact Det. Hall at (262) 877-9056.

“Business owners and employees are being reminded that counterfeit detection pens often generate false results and they should include other methods when checking currency,” the post explained.

The department issued the following tips:

– Check the bill’s texture. Legitimate bills are more rough to the touch.

– Tilt the bills back and forth to observe the color-shifting ink in the right-hand corner. On denominations of $10 or higher, most bills will shift from copper to green.

– Check the watermark and security thread by holding bills up to a light. A watermark should be visible from both sides and will match the portrait or denomination.

– A security thread should also be visible from both sides and match the denomination.

– When held to UV light, the security thread will glow a unique color.
