Community Foundation awards grants to Sharing Center

The Sharing Center of Trevor was one of 29 organizations in Kenosha County to receive a grant from the Kenosha Community Foundation, according to an issued press release.

Kenosha Community Foundation, which has five endowments funds, awarded nearly $90,000 this year, the release said.

Of the 29 grants, 19 were directed to nonprofit groups, including the Sharing Center which will use its funds to support three different endeavors.

The three endeavors come from the Foundation’s pool of Unrestricted funds, supporting shelter supervision and case management activities; the Outboard Marine Legacy Fund, targeted towards youth, providing school supplies and new shoes to Westosha area families in need; and the Women’s Fund, which directs money to Children’s Nutrition Programming, offering healthy mid-morning meals.

In addition to the Sharing Center, two other non-profit programs serving Western Kenosha County received grants, United Way of Kenosha County and Kenosha Common Markets, Inc.

The Foundation’s Unrestricted funds helped with the United Way initiative, where the offer free tax preparation and counseling in Salem, Twin Lakes and Kenosha through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Kenosha Common Markets, Inc., whose grant came from the Foundation’s Women’s Fund, received its grant to help match funds of SNAP/EBT users that shop at WestoshaMarket and Kenosha’s HarborMarket.

Three other non-profit organizations – the Kenosha Achievement Center, the Kenosha Literacy Council, and the Shalom Center of the Interfaith Network – also received three grant awards from the Foundation.

Change in award schedule for 2017
In the same announcement, Executive Director Robert Schneider stated that the Community Foundation will adjust the timeline for some of its 2017 grant making.

“We plan to award grants from four of our field of interest endowment funds in January 2017” said Schneider. “to accomplish this, in August (2016), we will issue a call for proposals for 2017 grants from our LaFave Family Fund, OMC Legacy Fund, Women’s Fund and Arts Fund.”

Applications for grants from these four funds will be due at the end of September (2016). The Foundation plans to announce grant awards in January 2017.

“We will continue to award grants from our pool of unrestricted funds in June,” the release said.
