While the defending National Champion Aquanuts Water Ski squad have performed before crowds at Lance Park since late May, the team made its first defense of the title in Janesville last weekend at the Mercury Open, where they finished third.

According to 15-year veteran Ariana Koehler, one of three Aquanuts to represent Team USA at September’s World Tournament, the Invitational is a stepping stone for larger tournaments.

“I think we are very proud of it, the Mercury (Open) is the kind of a tournament that we use to see where we are at and get us going,” said 21-year-old Ariana Koehler, who resides in Lake Geneva. “We know from there, how we need to move forward and what we need to improve going into more important competitions.”

Koehler’s sister, Kailey, agreed, adding it inspires them to do better as the season progresses.

“It is a good motivator for us to keep moving and keep practicing and get better and better,” stated Kailey, 20, another member of Team USA.

The Koehler sisters have notched multiple accolades in barefoot water ski events since 2010.

Swivel skier Kendall Krieger, the third Team USA member, explained the tournament is a building block for Aquanut newcomers.

“We get new people every year, so it is like the first tournament for them, and so it is a good opportunity for them to learn,” Krieger said.

On Team USA, the trio will compete against teams from Australia, Canada, China and Belgium in Wisconsin Rapids.

The full story will appear in an upcoming edition of the Twin Lakes Report.
