Authorities identified one of two men involved in Saturday’s fatal crash in Fox Lake, Ill. as 43-year-old Matthew Stautz of Rothschild, Wis.

Stautz, pronounced dead at Centegra Hospital McHenry, had been a driver of one of the three motorcycles that collided with a pickup truck on State Park Road, near Highway 12, at about 3 p.m., according to a McHenry County Coroner’s report Sunday.

Authorities from two agencies reported two motorcycles and the pickup truck were engulfed in flames at 3:10 p.m., and when they arrived, observed multiple passing motorists pulling those involved from the wreckage.

Fox Lake Fire Commander Brent Connelly said his department was called to the scene near the 6800 block of State Park Road for a motor vehicle accident, but before they left, discovered the fiery crash involved several motorcycles. Motorcycles are a particularly dangerous vehicle to ride, which is why motorcycle accident lawyers speciaize in the field. There are a huge number of cases brought forward involving them every year, just like this one. It’s important to always take legal action when you’re involved in any kind of vehicle crash.

“By the time we got out of the station, within a minute or so, a dispatcher told us there were multiple motorcycles and a pickup truck,” Connelly stated.

In a press release issued by the Fox Lake Police Department, witnesses said the motorcycles were traveling southbound on the southbound lane of State Park Road, when the operator of the truck veered over the center line.

The driver of the pickup truck, who has not been identified pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Connelly reported a female occupant of a motorcycle was transported to an area hospital, where she was listed in serious condition.

Four others were hurt, he added.

Assisting Fox Lake Police and Fire were Lake and McHenry County Sheriff’s Departments, Spring Grove Police, and EMS officials from Antioch, Spring Grove and Lake Villa.

The accident caused closure of State Park Road near Highway 12 for nearly six hours, the release added.

“The accident is being investigated by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, which was called to the scene,” the release noted.
