With senior golfer McKenna Stanek leading the Lady Panthers charge, and a slew of promising underclassmen, Wilmot Union High School hopes to finish in the top three of a highly competitive Southern Lakes Conference.

Stanek, a second-team all-SLC last year, has already started her senior season with a third place finish in the Aug. 11 Badger Par 3 Invitational held at the Barn Hollow Course of Hawk’s View Golf Club.

“McKenna Stanek will be the main player on varsity and should have another good year, hopefully placing her on first team,” said Lady Panthers’ golf coach Greg Olson, who enters his 18th season.

Stanek spent her summer competing in tournaments, producing four top five finishes in her eight meets, including a tie for second place on June 15 at Johnson Park Golf Course.

While Stanek looks to be main piece on a squad that finished 4-2 in the SLC, the Lady Panthers hope promising sophomores Keegan Destree and Lauren Christensen offset the loss of Ellie Turner, a first-team all-SLC last year and Tehya White.

Destree, who finished with an 86 at the Badger Invitational, was 10 strokes from cracking the top 10.

Additionally, junior newcomer Madison Bailey should also make the lineup for the Lady Panthers.

As Olson relies on Stanek’s leadership, along with the promising future of Destree and Christensen, he acknowledged it will be a daunting task to supplant last year’s conference champion Union Grove and second-place Waterford.

“This year in the SLC there are two teams that I think will battle for the conference championship – Union Grove and Waterford,” Olson stated. “Grove returns all of their varsity players minus Maria Suokko and Waterford led by Taitum Beck also has a full complement of varsity players.”

Beck started her season with an Invitational record 62 at Hawk’s View Golf Course, helping the Wolverines win the meet, edging the conference champion Broncos by two strokes.
