When a team boasts three WIAA Division 1 Sectional Golf qualifiers from a year ago, it brings plenty of optimism, and Westosha Central High School/Shoreland Lutheran is one of those teams.

Returning to the Lady Falcons as seniors are first-team all-Southern Lakes Conference Colleen Nolan (47.8 average), Mallory Scheppa (48.3) on the second-team and Lexi Carlson (51.4), an honorable mention from last year.

Along with the three sectional qualifiers, the Lady Falcons return seniors Emily Allen and Claudia Fox from a 2015 squad that finished 2-2-2 in dual meets and second overall in the final SLC standings.

Rounding out the team is senior Carli Podella along with freshmen Lyndsey Gulbrandson and Abbey Luellen.

But, standing in the way of coach Dan Peterson’s goal of obtaining a conference title is last year’s defending champion Union Grove, who lost a key piece in Mari Suokko.

Additionally, Peterson noted Waterford, led by Taitum Beck, could be a challenge for Westosha Central.

“It looks like it will be a very competitive season this year in the Southern Lakes Conference,” said Peterson, who enters his 18th season. “Union Grove and Waterford look to be the favorites with the returning players they have.”

On Aug. 11 at the Barn Hollow Course of Hawk’s View Golf Club, Beck established a Badger Par 3 Invitational record 62, lifting her Waterford team to a tournament victory beating Union Grove by two strokes.

In the same meet, Nolan led all Lady Falcon golfers with a 76, three shots from cracking the top 10.

Furthermore, Carlson finished two strokes behind her at 78.

While the first meet is in the books, Peterson maintains his season goals, including an SLC title, repeating as the Kenosha County Invitational Champions, team sectional qualifiers and state qualifiers as a team.

However, he acknowledged other teams within the SLC could play spoilers, including Wilmot Union High School and Lake Geneva Badger.

“(They) are definitely in the mix also and can be spoilers in any meet they play due to the senior experience or strong newcomers coming to their teams,” Peterson stated.
