A 52-year-old Town of Salem man remains hospitalized, as of Monday, after a Jet Ski he was working on exploded Saturday, but the home is not a total loss, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.

The explosion that occurred before 10 a.m. sparked multiple calls from neighbors in the 24800 block of 82nd Street.

“The original call was an explosion on 81st Street,” said Town of Salem Fire Chief Slover. “The second or third call that came in said it was a boat on fire and catching the garage on fire.”

While en route, Salem Fire and Rescue personnel were told the victim, Michael Przlomski, was administered CPR.

When they arrived, he was conscious, but injured and on the ground, Slover reported.

Citing potential internal injuries, Salem Fire and Rescue immediately transported him to St. Catherine’s Hospital,

“He was conscious and alert, talkative and was able to answer the medics questions,” Slover said.

“But we wanted to get him to the hospital because of the type of mechanism of injury.”

Damages to the home were minimal, said Slover, who noted the garage door had been charred along with some siding.

Initially, the call dispatched four departments, including Bristol, but Slover cancelled three of four.

“I cancelled everybody when I got there,” said Slover.

While they have not determined the precise cause, Slover believes improper ventilation of the gasoline chamber may have led to the explosion.

While the fire is still under investigation, Sgt. Eric Klinkhammer reported Monday the victim was still at St. Catherine’s Hospital.

“The house had cosmetic damage,” Klinkhammer said. “(Przlomski) is still hospitalized.”

No additional information regarding Przlomski’s status was available as of Monday.

“Preliminary findings indicate the victim had parked his Jet Ski in his driveway,” a Sheriff’s Department news release stated. “It appears as though the ignition was operated on the machine that may have caused the explosion due to gasoline fumes.”
