Authorities are still investigating the cause of a Wednesday afternoon fire that destroyed a residential home on Sunset Drive in Twin Lakes, and according to a Twin Lakes Police Department press release, the elderly homeowners were not home when it started.

However, one of two cats did not survive the blaze, the press released added.

The fire in the 1700 block of Sunset Drive sparked warning sirens throughout the Village of Twin Lakes at about 12:15 p.m.

While authorities were en route to the fire scene, an 80-year-old man attempted to gain entry into the burning building to save both cats, and suffered minor burns.

“There were two cats, which one later escaped and the other was later discovered deceased,” the release stated.

When Twin Lakes Police arrived to the scene, they discovered the home fully engulfed in flames.

The fire led to several mutual aid requests from at least eight different fire departments in two states.

“The cause of this fire is under investigation by the Twin Lakes Police Department with assistance from the Kenosha County Fire task force,” the release stated.

But, according to Twin Lakes Police Chief Adam Grosz, authorities do not suspect foul play.

Responding agencies in Wisconsin were the towns of Wheatland, Randall, Salem and the Village of Twin Lakes.

Bloomfield/Genoa City also responded.

Agencies from Illinois were the towns of Richmond and Spring Grove along with the Village of Wonder Lake.

Also, the Racine Fire Belles came to offer replenishments to firefighters.

The Twin Lakes Report and Westosha Report will have the full story as more information becomes available.
