As a freshman, Wilmot Union High School’s Bianca Andersen produced a phenomenal run that included a WIAA Division 1 sectional tennis appearance.

Bianca Andersen won the Muskego Invitational and finished first at an East Troy Quad earlier this season.

Andersen, however, is in a position to eclipse her freshman feat after winning her ninth consecutive match to start the season in Thursday’s win against Lake Geneva Badger.

She won in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) against Alexis Wisdom.

Lady Panthers’ coach Lisa Obertin believes the sophomore is just getting started.

“She is phenomenal,” Obertin stated. “I can see her at this point, winning the Southern Lakes Conference, and I see her doing well in sub sectionals, and I am really looking to see her at sectionals.”

As the Lady Panthers No. 1 singles player, Andersen finished 7-3 as a freshman, and in No. 2 singles, went 10-1.

While she dropped her first sectionals match last year, Obertin envisions Andersen making a larger leap her sophomore season.

“She just want to keep getting better and better, and doesn’t want to hit that plateau,” said Obertin, adding Andersen is capable of “reaching state as a sophomore.”

“She is playing that well.”

Andersen, who qualified in June for USTA event in Indiana, has intensified her offseason workout that consisted of more weekly practice sessions.

“I have been practicing a lot more over the winter, practicing four times a week, and it’s really helped me,” said Andersen, noting she leans on her teammates, including her sister, Bella, for strength.

“All of the teammates have been really supportive and have really helped me.”

While the pressure is there, Andersen opts to take her sophomore season in stride, focusing on one match at time.

“I am just going to go out there and play my game and hopefully it will pay off,” Andersen said.

The Westosha Report and Twin Lakes Report will have tennis previews of both Wilmot and Westosha Central in next week’s print editions.
