Falcons allowed 21 first half points

Coming off a winning effort against Milwaukee Washington, Westosha Central High School could not maintain the same intensity against visiting nonconference opponent Zion-Benton Friday, dropping a 40-22 verdict.

Despite the loss, the Falcons demonstrated signs of improvement from last year’s showdown against the Zeebees on the road, when they lost 58-15.

“Tonight our team proved something,” said Falcons coach Tyson Mengel. “Yes, we lost but Zion took it to us last year.”

Down 19-16 entering halftime, Westosha Central stayed within striking distance, but the Falcons allowed 21 second half points and only countered with six points in the fourth quarter.

After Zion-Benton posted a touchdown on a 72-yard run, the Falcons responded with back-to-back touchdowns and a field goal to pull ahead 17-7 entering the second quarter, when they allowed two scores.

Falcons senior quarterback Josiah McDermit, who completed nine of 28 passes for 89 yards, scored first on a 5-yard run before senior Tre Williams added the second touchdown with a run of 30 yards.

McDermit led all Falcons rushers with 71 total yards on 13 attempts.

Westosha Central capped off the first quarter rally with a senior Nick Penge 25-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Zion-Benton retook the lead with two touchdown passes by Joseph Powell, who finished with 13 completions of 20 attempts for 190 yards.

The Falcons opened the third quarter with a promising drive, but could not capitalize on the effort, resulting in Zion-Benton breaking the game open with three rushing touchdowns to put the Falcons in a 40-17 hole.

“We had a seven minute drive that stalled out in the red zone,” Mengel said. “Unfortunately, Zion scored very quickly after that let down giving them a 14 point swing.”

Zion-Benton scored on runs of 68 and 48 yards, including one from Zeebes leading rusher T.J. Brister, who had 12 rushes for 142 yards.

Westosha Central diminished the Zeebees lead to 40-22 on a sophomore Nico Lemke 22-yard run in the fourth quarter, but was not enough for the Falcons, taking the loss.

“Their big plans killed us tonight,” Mengel said. “Take away one or two of them, this is a different game.”

The Falcons open its Southern Lakes Conference schedule Friday against visiting Union Grove, who is 2-0 to start the season, but Mengel knows that his team can challenge the Broncos.

“I am proud of this team. They came out and gave everything they had tonight,” he stated. “This is a special team and will make our school and community proud.”
