Volleyball Notes: Wilmot takes 2nd in Invite, Westosha 7th at Joust

Wilmot Union High School went 4-1 en route to a second place finish in the gold bracket at its own tournament Aug. 27.

The Lady Panthers rattled off four straight wins, defeating Beloit Turner (25-13, 25-16), Milwaukee School of Languages (25-15, 19-25, 15-9) and Cudahy (25-13, 25-13) to advance to the semifinal match against Kenosha Christian Life.

Wilmot, who beat Christian Life in three sets (23-25, 25-23, 16-14), moved on to the championship match where they played Stoughton.

After the Lady Panthers dropped the first set 20-25, they won the second 25-22 to force a third match, where they lost 15-9.

Junior Becca Bell and Lauren Daniels each contributed 20 kills while junior Sara Bedessem had 12 aces and 45 digs.

Daniels added 28 digs and Devin Coleman pitched in with 23 assists.

Wilmot takes third in Sheboygan
Wilmot Union High School won three of five girls volleyball matches en route to a third place finish at a Sheboygan South tournament Aug. 25.

After the Lady Panthers beat St. Mary’s Springs (25-18, 25-19), they dropped the next match against Howard’s Grove (25-12, 25-18), but bounced back to win against Brown Deer (25-14, 25-7).

Wilmot rounded out its slate with a loss to host Sheboygan South in three sets (21-25, 25-20, 14-16), following up with a victory against Port Washington (25-23, 25-21).

Senior Lauren Daniels contributed a team-leading 25 kills, along with eight service aces, and 33 digs.

Devin Coleman, a senior setter, compiled 72 assists through all five contests and junior Sara Bedessem had 43 digs in her Lady Panthers debut.

Becca Bell, a junior, accumulated 10 service aces while leading in blocks was senior Laney Videlka with 4.5.
Freshman Karina Leber added 20 kills.

Westosha Central takes 7th at Joust
After opening with three wins, the Lady Falcons dropped two of three matches in the second day of the 24-team Joust Tournament held at Mequon’s Homestead High School, taking seventh in the silver bracket.

The Lady Falcons, who won against Lake Country Lutheran (25-11, 23-25, 15-9) to start Saturday, dropped the last two matches against Oconomowoc (22-25, 23-25) and Neenah (19-25, 15-25).

Leading contributors on Saturday were seniors Kaeley Mueller (19 kills) and Abi Marcquenski (18 kills), sophomores Sierra Lee (30 assists) and Kennedy Muff (18 assists) and senior Sarah Blair (42 digs).

According to coach Charlie Berg, Saturday’s performance brought a new learning experience, in a statement issued to reporters.

“The girls proved to have a fighting spirit,” Berg stated. “Today’s team were challenging us for each point…we have to learn to adjust better and play a better ball.”

On opening night, the Lady Falcons went undefeated, beating all three schools in two sets.

Westosha Central, who went 1-2 on opening night last year, started with a victory against Kimberly (25-16, 25-8), later defeating opponent Brookfield East in the second match (27-25, 25-21).

To close out Friday’s slate, Westosha Central beat Neenah (25-18, 25-23).

Sophomore Laura Shoopman pitched in with a team-leading 21 kills, and contributed defensively, adding 25 digs.

Blair, a libero, led with 42 digs while Mueller had 18 kills.

Junior Devin Gillespie accumulated 10 kills and 18 digs.

Lee had 30 assists and Muff added 22 of her own.
