Free motorcycle driver programs offered at Gateway Tech

Gateway Technical College’s motorcycle rider program will provide four free motorcycle and driver programs designed to make roads safer through providing accurate tips and information on sharing the road, perception in traffic, group riding and the “seasoned rider.”

Sessions will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays in March at the Horizon Center for Transportation Technology, 4940 88th Ave., Kenosha. They include:

Sharing the Road with Motorcycles and Scooters, March 7

With higher gas prices, there are millions of motorcyclists and scooter riders on the road and many of them are injured in accidents involving automobiles. Attendees will learn how they can help prevent these accidents through the many tips and methods provided in this session.

The participative “share the road” workshop combines personal stories and character development with a dramatic new look at a crash scene that’s all too common. The discussions will look at sharing the road from the vehicle driver’s and motorcycle rider’s perspective.

Continuing to Ride as We Mature, March 14

With the average age of motorcyclists now exceeding 40, the “seasoned rider” program is a fun, activity-based learning module designed to help riders assess and compensate for the effects of aging on their ability to effectively manage risk when operating a motorcycle. Although the content and activities are generally targeted at riders over the age of 40, the sessions are appropriate for any age and any type of vehicle operator.

Street Smart—Rider Perception, March 21

Seeing is one thing, but perceiving what’s happening on the road is critical for a motorcyclist. This engaging session will help attendees improve their perception abilities. They will gain the skills to more readily identify factors in traffic situations that could affect their speed, lane position and path of travel.

Group Riding, March 28

The easiest way to share a passion for motorcycling is by riding with friends in a group ride. This session covers information needed to know to put safety first whenever participating in a group ride event.

Learn about ride preparation and organization, pre-ride meetings, hand signals and proper riding formations in complex traffic situations. This participative workshop will address many of the questions on riding as a group.

In addition to the seminar series, Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility (THE REF) will be at the Kenosha Campus March 28. This WISDOT portable classroom, paid for through the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, provides multiple learning opportunities for riders and the general public.
