Falcons shut down by Waterford defense

WestoshaCentral-webWestosha Central High School sophomore Adam Simmons threw his first career varsity touchdown against visiting Waterford Friday, but the milestone came when the Falcons were down 35-0 in the fourth quarter.

Simmons, in relief of senior Josiah McDermit, completed four of eight passes to cap off Friday’s performance.

The Falcons, still searching for their first SLC win, drops to 1-5 (0-3) after the 35-6 loss to Waterford.

Westosha Central coach Tyson Mengel attributes the loss to first half miscues, putting them in a 21-0 entering halftime.

“We were outplayed tonight,” Mengel said. “We didn’t tackle well in the first half and put ourselves in a hole.”

Waterford compiled 321 rushing yards and accounted for four of the team’s five touchdowns, including the first from Ben Michalowski in the opening quarter, scampering for 13-yard score.

Michalowski, who rushed for a team-leading 114 yards on 16 carries, added his second of three touchdowns in the second quarter on a 1-yard punch.

Wolverines quarterback Matt Korman closed out the first half with a 31-yard touchdown to Aaron Chapman.

After Michalowski added his third touchdown to open the second half, Jared Krattinger scampered in for an 11-yard score.

Entering the fourth quarter, Simmons connected with senior Tre Williams on 25-yard touchdown.

In addition to Simmons, senior Logan Hughes contributed to the offense, producing 40 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Waterford improved to 5-1 (3-1 SLC) after Friday’s win.

While Mengel acknowledged the loss is difficult, the coach hopes the Falcons can bounce back against Delavan-Darien next week.

“Unfortunately, we did not rise to the challenge offensively either,” he said. “It is imperative we come out this week and have a great week of practice to prepare for Delavan.”
