Early absentee voting in clerks’ offices expanded

When U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson of the state’s Western District struck down parts of Wisconsin’s 2011 voter ID law, among other election laws in July, municipalities expanded office hours for voters to cast absentee ballots.

As of last week, anyone who wishes to vote absentee for any reason may do so.

Qualified voters are any U.S. citizen 18 years or older, who have resided within a ward or municipality for at least 10 days leading up to the day of election.

Eligible voters must register in their respective municipal clerk’s office and submit a photo ID along with proof of residency to receive an absentee ballot.

No in-person absentee voting may occur on the day before the election.

On, or before, Election Day, clerks will present the returned absentee ballots to the appropriate polling place.

Absentee ballots received after the polls close will be not be counted.

Here’s a look at the early absentee voting hours in area communities:

In the Town of Salem, early absentee voting hours are 8 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 through 4 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 3, until Friday, Oct. 21.

Starting Monday, Oct. 24 through Nov. 4, the Town Hall at 9814 Antioch Rd. will expand its hours, opening at 7 a.m. and running until 11:30 a.m., before reopening at 12:30 p.m. with a 5 p.m. closing time.

Village of Paddock Lake
For the Village of Paddock Lake, Clerk/Treasurer Emily Uhlenhake plans to begin early voting in her office as soon as she receives the ballots, which could be as early as Sept. 22.

“I’m glad we are starting earlier,” Uhlenhake said in a telephone interview. “When a voter comes in, I’d rather be able to let that person vote on the spot rather than giving out an application to mail a ballot.”

“I’d rather allow them to vote when they wish to vote,” she said.

Village of Twin Lakes
New Village Clerk Laura Roesslein plans to start absentee voting Oct. 3 at the Village Hall, 108 E. Main St., Twin Lakes leading up to the Friday before the election.

Roesslin states the hours of 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. will remain the same.
