On the same week Westosha Central High School moved up to fifth in the state girls volleyball rankings, the Falcons swept visiting Burlington en route to their fifth straight Southern Lakes Conference win to start the season.

Westosha Central, which has won the last three meetings against the Lady Demons, won 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 Sept. 27.

While the Falcons have the current bragging rights in the rivalry, coach Charlie Berg noted trends change from time to time.

“We have been doing probably for close to 30 years, I have known Teri Leach since the late 80’s,” Berg said. “It brings out the best in both squads.”

But, on Sept. 27, Westosha Central kept hitting the shorter Demons squad, accounting for 41 team kills, compared to 20 for Burlington.

Senior Kaeley Mueller produced 14 of the Falcons 41 kills, and added nine digs and a block.

Laura Shoopman, a sophomore, had 11 kills and five blocks.

Additionally, the Falcons defended the net, where they accumulated 10 blocks.

Sophomore setter Kennedy Muff, who contributed nine assists, led the Falcons with six blocks.

“On any given night, anybody can beat anybody,” Berg said. “There were years where we had close matches, but tonight, we had all systems going.”

Defensively, senior libero Sarah Blair pitched in with 21 digs while junior Devin Gillespie added 13.

“We were very good offensively, we had tremendous defense, Sarah dug a lot of balls,” “It was a whole package,” Berg said.

Sophomore Sierra Lee paced the offense, contributing 19 assists.

According to Leach, the Demons could not keep up with the Falcons arsenal of weapons.

“They are very balanced, they have a lot of weapons, and they bring hitters that can move that ball around,” Leach said. “I thought we played really hard and aggressive on defense. To me, our biggest issue was our serve-receive.”

Leading the Demons were Megan Wallace (five kills), Kaeley Blake and Reba Thomsen (nine assists) and Brooklyn Vandehei (14 digs).
