Wilmot’s Vozel receives national recognition

Senior named Commended Student

With more than 1.6 million students vying for a 2017 National Merit Scholarship, a program presented by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, just 34,000 receive recognition for showcasing exceptional promise, according to a NMSC press release.

The recognition, known as the Commended Student honor, includes Wilmot Union High School’s Hannah Vozel.

Vozel, a senior, received the honor after she placed among the top five percent of all students who took the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Test.

While she did not earn a Merit Scholarship, the Wilmot senior received letters of commendation from the school and the NMSC, the release stated.

According to the news release, the Commended Student honor is a prestigious acknowledgment, noting students exhibit promise.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” the release stated. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishment, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development.”

Additionally, the honor is a building block for future student excellence.

“We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success,” the release stated.
